Manually submitting links to directories, spamming on forums and blogs, is a blackhat technique. You usually shouldn't spend to much time obsessing about links, the real traffic comes when you start to create more content.
Good links are hard to come by these days, most links are nofollow, and with that in mind, hunting for blogs and forums might not be the best way to spend your time. For the same reason, its also become more rare to get dofollow links, especially for newer sites. Most links you do get that are dofollow, are more likely to come from forums and blogs, than social networks. But it isn't that long ago, that Google stated they where beginning to factor in the activity on social networks, how exactly that data is used is still unknown. Its more clear for Google+ since it has its own category in webmaster tools, showing impressions and clicks from +1'd pages.
